In 1979, at ’La Pineta’ in Isernia, the oldest Paleolithic remains in Europe were discovered. These remains are of inestimable importance for paleontologists and date back to 730,000 years ago.
In order to make this unique patrimony available to the public, to protect it and to permit the excavations, which also have educational value, to continue, a new futuristic type of museum has been planned on top of the remains and where it will be possible to observe and participate in the work. In the meantime, the extraordinary findings have been recomposed and are on exhibit, for the most part, in the Musuem of Santa Maria delle Monache.
