Festival of San Lorenzo at Grosseto

Festival of San Lorenzo at Grosseto
On the 10th of August Grosseto celebrates its patron saint with a night-time procession when a statue of the saint is placed on an ox-drawn cart and pulled through the town proceeded by ‘butteri’. The parade is followed by a musical band, members of the church and the bishop. There is also the San Lorenzo race, a sports competition among the four districts of the town.
The city of Grosseto, located on flat land, largely developed after the work to reclaim the area (18th -20th century) along the right bank of the Ombrone river and just a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
