For the festival of San Jacopo, the patron saint of Pistoia, the town holds a jousting of the bear competition among its four districts b> Cervo bianco, Drago, Grifone, Leone (White stag, Dragon, Griffon, Lion). The test lies in jousting a ”bear”, the symbol of Pistoia, which sits in the town’s main square between the Magistrate’s palace and the City Hall in an area covered with dirt for the event. The knights test their skills two at a time, galloping toward the target and receiving points for the efforts. The district with the most points wins and there is also the prize for the best knight who receives the title of Knight of the golden spur of Pistoia and the surroundings. In addition to the competition, there is also a picturesque historic pagent.
