Wines from Basilicata
The Lucani, for a fact, were the first ones who cultivated vines in this region, even if in the past archaeological interpretations were in disagreement upon this subject. For sure, the inhabitants have done a great job in such cultivation, establishing a robust tradition. Also the famous satirical poet, Orazio, in the 1st century B.C. praised and wrote about the region’s wines with great emphasis. In time, some areas have become more predominant than others because of their wines, but also thanks to their political situation. An important centre that developed in an excellent way in wine producing was the town of Melfi, the ancient capital of the reign of the Two Sicilies, when Federic II of Sweden was king. After Melfi, Vulture became the predominant area.
Among the local vineyards, Aglainico is the most famous vine that grows in the Vulture area.
The exquisite wine of the same name is the best one you can drink in Lucania (naturally, excluding the ‘bitters’).
