The Zinzulusa grotto

The Zinzulusa grotto
The ancient Roman “fortified camp” (castrum), a small pearl for the Salerno area, has now become a well known touristic destination on the Tyrrhenian coast, situated in the southern part of Puglia. The beauty of its sea, between shades of light blue and green, and the white of the village, make this area worth visiting just for the surroundings. The Zinzulusa grotto got its name from the dialect word “zinzuli”, which means “rags”, because of the characteristic Stalactites on the grottos ceiling worn away from the sea to look like hanging rags waiting to dry. The sea floor inside the grotto, even though deep, is clear and very colourful. In ancient times the grotto was inhabited, in fact many important paleonthological and paletnological remains have been found inside. Even though the grotto is close to the sea it still presents various carsic effects such as stalactites and stalagmites.
