Giagantic grotto of Friuli

Giagantic grotto of Friuli
When a town gets its name from an important person or a natural phenomenon, it means that whatever it is has to be big. What would you say of an entryway so big that even Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome could fit inside without a scratch?Well, this is the size of the giant grotto, an extraordinary carsic phenomenon, full of interesting concretions. It opens up into the heart of the mountain, near the municipality of Sgonico. This entryway was already inhabited in the Neolithic Age (in fact archaeologists have found many prehistoric remains which are all displayed in the town museum), but it was discovered only in 1840, and has been open to the public since 1908.
